It is clear that we American Christian Democrats are in a jam. We've become the silent majority,
we have almost no political voice and the Radical Right has stolen the humble, compassionate,
inclusive and loving "peoples" mantle of a Liberal Jesus and converted Him into a judgmental, elitist,
ultra conservative fascist poster boy. Let's just say it: "How did Jesus become pro-rich, pro-war and
only pro-America? It is time to take back our faith. Any Gospel that isn't 'good news' to poor people
is simply not the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And since when did promoting and pursuing a progressive
social agenda with a concern for economic security, health care, and educational opportunity mean
you had to put faith in God aside?"" - Jim Wallis, Sojourners. Read it again - please. Got it?! :-)
Many pundits claim that the last two Presidential elections went to the Republican Party because
of the Right Wing, Conservative Evangelical Christian vote. The fascinating thing is that Liberal,
Progressive and Democratic Party Christians far out number the Radical Evangelical Republicans.
So what's the problem? We believe that Christian Democrats have not passionately shared their
beliefs and have not openly made the direct connection between their Christian values and the
political choices and consequences.
Americans are among the most religious people in the world - and we openly profess that our beliefs
influence our voting, our form of government and our social policy. Yet - where is the political power
of the American Liberal Christian? Consider, as Charles Reed recently said: "We now have the most
corrupt, dishonest, and mean-spirited government in our history. Its performance in people programs
is the worst in the industrial world. The world's richest country is at or near the bottom in things like:
minimum wage, vacation time, paternity leave, poverty rate, illiteracy rate, crime rate, prison rate,
access to health care, access to legal services, access to decent housing, access to public
transportation, and access to higher education." How is this possible and what can be done?
That answer is largely up to you. And me. And us. We need to talk, to learn new ways of speaking
to our neighbors, to understand the agenda behind the highly spun Radical Right's rhetoric, and to
become clear - crystal clear about how our Liberal Christian values are represented in politics, in
places of worship, in schools and in society at large. As Jim Wallis said recently: "In the public
square, religion has to be disciplined by democracy. That means you don't enter the public square
and say I'm religious so I ought to win. Or God has spoken to me directly and I have the fix for Social
Security. You say my faith motivates me. It shapes my convictions or it compels me to act on behalf
of the poor or peace or whatever."
Most Americans support the ideals and programs and practical day to day applications of Liberal
Christian ideals - brought to us not just by great Americans like Martin Luther King Jr. and John F.
Kennedy, but by countless tens of thousands of every day people. What is so striking is that most
Americans believe in what Jesus taught and commanded of his followers in His Sermon on the
Mount: fairness, justice, compassion, tolerance, compassion and love....and yet many vote for
those Radical Right Wing "Christian" Republicans whose policies and programs work such grave
injustices, lack tolerance, lack compassion, lack fairness and lack justice, and the hands on
application of His Love.
So this is just the beginning! Start reading. Start organizing. Start connecting. And, then come
back to this page - because we'll be talking more about just how important you are to not only the
next Congressional (2006) and Presidential elections (2008), but also to the impact that you can
have every single day! In fact, we predict that THE dominant force in the next several US elections
will be the New Liberal Christian Democrats!

Corporate Greed and the Religion of Wealth: In the temple courts [Jesus] found men selling cattle, sheep and doves and
other sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep
and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. [John 2:14 & 15.] Watch out! Be on
your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. [Luke 12.15.]
Truly, I say unto you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. [Matthew 19:23] You cannot serve both
God and Money. [Matthew 6:24.]
Paying Taxes & Separation of Church & State: Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God
the things that are God's. [Matthew 22:21]
Community: Love your neighbor as yourself. .[Matthew 22:39] So in everything, do to others as you would have them do
to you.[Matthew 7:12.] If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure
in heaven. [Matthew 19:21]
Equality & Social Programs: But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be
blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just. [Luke 14:13 &14.]
Public Prayer & Displays of Faith: And when thou pray, thou shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray
standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They
have their reward. But thou, when thou pray, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father
which is in secret… [Matthew 6:6 & 7]
Strict Enforcement of Religious Laws: If any of you has a son or a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not
take hold of it and lift it out? [Matthew 12:11] The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. [Mark 2:27.]
Individuality & Personal Spiritual Experience: Ye are the light of the world. [Matthew 5:14]
